Travel to Ecuador – Surfing championship in Galapagos

About 80 athletes from different parts of the world took a travel to Ecuador to participate in the first professional surfing championship called “Galapagos Islands Surf 2017”, which took place in the Galapagos Islands from April 21 to 23 of this year 2017.

The quality of the waves that are recorded in these days in the Playa Brava (Santa Cruz Island), drew the attention of the President of the Ecuadorian Surf Federation, who announced that Galapagos Islands could be the possible site of a future world surfing championship. During the event, Shania Rendon age 15, reached two podiums of the 10 categories that were selected for this championship, placing the Galapagos on the map of the best places to surf and the best exponents in this friendly sport with nature.

Before and during the competition, which is held for the first time in the archipelago with the support of the Ecuadorian Surfing Federation, Surf lovers toured Bahía Tortuga, which is composed of two bodies of sand: Playa Brava, an excellent place for surfing; And the Playa Mansa which is ideal for diving, kayaking, or just enjoying a relaxed day with family.

This event, supported by the Ministry of Tourism was also meant to increase the awareness on the different activities available when taking a travel to Ecuador. It confirms that Galapagos and Bahía Tortuga, besides being attractive sites for tourism, are destinations capable of hosting important national and international surf tournaments.

Located on Santa Cruz Island, Tortuga Bay is the largest and most famous white coral sand beach in the Galapagos Islands. The beach is 2.5 kilometers from the city of Puerto Ayora. This site can be reached on a panga or walking from Puerto Ayora with an estimated walking time of 50 minutes.
